Apple A15 Bionic: All you need to know about the iPhone 13 chip
Apple has officially revealed the Apple A15 Bionic processor, which will be powering both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro.
This new processor will supposedly become “the fastest chip in a smartphone”, with Apple looking to increase its lead over the competition.
But what kind of performance advantage are you getting over the previous A14 Bionic? Keep scrolling for everything we know about the A15 Bionic chip, and keep this page bookmarked for future updates.
Specs
New processor generations usually come with smaller process nodes, allowing for more transistors and therefore a faster performance. However, the A15 disappointingly has the same-size 5nm manufacturing process, which indicates there may not be as great of a performance jump here as previously hoped.
That said, Apple has confirmed the A15 Bionic will still feature 15 billions transistors, which is an increase from the 11.8 billion transistors found on the A14 Bionic. This means the iPhone 13 will see a performance jump compared to the iPhone 12, although it’s currently unclear how much faster it will be.
Apple has also confirmed that the A15 Bionic will use the same number of CPU cores as the A14: four energy-efficient cores and two high-performance cores. But again, the improvements to the architecture should still ensure that the iPhone 13 is more powerful than the iPhone 12.
Interestingly, Apple is offering two different configurations of the A15 Bionic when it comes to graphics: the iPhone 13 will have 4 GPU cores, but the iPhone 13 Pro will have 5.
This means the iPhone 13 Pro will be the faster phone when it comes to running games and editing video. Apple claims this is the most powerful graphics performance you can currently find in a smartphone.
And lastly, Apple has confirmed that the A15 Bionic features a new 16-core Neural Engine that’s capable of 15.8 trillion operations per second. This allows for improved machine learning, which provides a boost for the likes of Siri and Live Text in Camera.
When will it be released?
Apple has confirmed that the A15 Bionic will launch inside the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro on 24 September.
Pre-orders for the smartphone will open on the 17 September, so you’ve only got a few days left until you can reserve yourself one.
